How Is T2T Circularity Going Commercial? PERFORMANCE DAYS SS 2028 Trends & Honmyue's Featured Fabrics

PERFORMANCE DAYS is the leading global trade show for functional textiles and trims. Its Munich edition in spring 2026 set out the direction for 2028 S/S: T2T (textile-to-textile) recycling has reached commercial maturity; judging has shifted from "how much recycled content" to "will it work in real commercial use"; and mono-material construction, PFAS-free water repellency and lower microfibre shedding are becoming design starting points. Of the four PERFORMANCE DAYS Awards, Taiwan's Wu Luen Knitting won the Innovation Award, while Honmyue had five fabrics recommended by the jury for The Trend Forum Fabrics.

Three Signals for 2028 S/S: Recycled Materials Move from "Eco Concept" to Commercial Reality

Held in Munich in March 2026, PERFORMANCE DAYS is a trade show for functional and sustainable textiles. This season the organisers put the spotlight on "Textile to Textile – The Role of Collectors & Sorters" — the most upstream, and most overlooked, link in the circular economy. For the first time, the show also teamed up with research platform TheCube Archive and Luca Zanatta, head of fabric research at Diesel, to open the "Creative Area," putting performance and fashion in the same conversation.

At the Day 0 workshop "Turn the Tap Off," facilitator Bowie Miles made a point that was hard to miss: the industry can no longer focus only on dealing with waste at the end of the line. Real sustainability goes back to the source, building durability, mono-material construction and closed-loop circularity into a product at the very start of design.

SignalWhat the Show SaidWhat It Means for Sourcing
① T2T is no longer a niche experimentBoth physical and chemical recycling routes have reached commercial maturity and are widely used in base layers, mid-layers and other apparelT2T can go into formal development plans — it no longer has to be treated as an image project
② Judges ask "will it work commercially?"Judging focused on whether a technology holds up in real commercial use, returning to fabric performance, manufacturing craft and end-product valueRecycled content is the baseline; performance and production feasibility are what earn the extra points
③ Design starts at the sourceFrom molecular-level recycling and source-level plastic reduction to PFAS-free weather protection and fashion aesthetics, the work all responds to design "at the birth of the material"Ask at the material-selection stage: where does this fabric go after use?

The Four Awards: Structural Innovation Meets Molecular-Level Recycling

Among this season's four headline PERFORMANCE DAYS Awards, Taiwanese companies and international leaders drove change through structural innovation and molecular-level recycling respectively. Putting the four winning fabrics in one table makes the pattern clearer:

AwardWinnerMaterialKey Technology & Function
Innovation AwardWu Luen Knitting Co., Ltd. (Taiwan)WoolProprietary NeoWarp™ warp-knitting technology breaks the limits of traditional weft-knit wool. It keeps wool's natural temperature regulation and soft skin feel while adding high dimensional stability, snag resistance and controlled stretch, extending wool into high-intensity sport
Eco Performance AwardREO-ECO "T2T OUTDOOR"100% post-consumer recycled polyesterBioCulus® enzymatic recycling depolymerises and purifies polyester at 60–65°C, then re-forms it into recycled polyester that plugs straight into existing polymerisation and spinning systems (shown at 77 g/m², 5000 mm water column)
Performance AwardToray International Europe GmbH100% recycled nylon (RCS certified, 15-denier filament)Made by chemically breaking down waste garments and fabrics, combining tear strength, wind resistance, breathability and PFC-free DWR water repellency
Wool AwardSüdwolle Group (Germany), "Algawool (Alginate Body)"70% merino wool + 30% alginate fibrePairs a marine-sourced circular material with a natural land fibre, with natural antibacterial, moisturising and skin-friendly, flame-retardant and antistatic properties
Two details worth noting for sourcing teams:
  • Recycling is moving to the molecular level. REO-ECO uses enzymes to depolymerise at low temperature, while Toray chemically turns old garments and offcuts back into filament. Both point the same way: recycled material has to come close to virgin quality before it has a chance of replacing it.
  • PFAS-free is now standard in award-level fabrics. Toray's winner specifies PFC-free DWR; Texet's check fabric at the same show uses fluorine-free water repellency; and Honmyue's recommended Mono-Poly Pro, Mono-NetCycle and Eco Cotton-Like all specify fluorine-free (PFC-free / C0) water repellency. Fluorine-free is no longer a bonus — it is an entry requirement.

The T2T Focus Topic: Beyond Recycled Content to Structural Design

This season's Focus Topic was T2T, and the fabrics the jury recommended show recycled materials moving from "eco concept" to real product use. Carol Textile's T to T, for example, is 100% rec. PES with a 3D embossed effect (84 g/m²); different post-treatments or composite structures can be specified on T2T fabric, with windproof and anti-pile options. Lithuania's Utenos Trikotazas offers a jacquard made from pre-consumer recycled cotton (100% rec. CO, 230 g/m²), and carries responsible production into dyeing and finishing through waste-water heat recovery and condensate recycling.

Three "Structure-First" T2T Approaches

Beyond using recycled raw material directly, T2T is developing in another direction too: rethinking sustainability through fabric structure, product lifespan and in-use performance.

Reading the Show Against Market Data: The Technology Is Ready, Supply Isn't

The show says T2T is commercially mature, yet market volumes are still small. Textile Exchange's Materials Market Report 2026 puts T2T recycled polyester at roughly 300,000 tonnes in 2025, just 0.3% of global polyester output, and notes that about 97% of recycled polyester still comes from waste plastic bottles. Recycled nylon is a different story: around 90% of it falls into the T2T category.

Our reading: The technology works and brands want it, but clean, consistent waste-textile feedstock is still scarce. That is why this season's theme centred on "collectors and sorters" — the T2T bottleneck sits upstream in the supply chain. For sourcing teams, suppliers who can both secure T2T feedstock and turn it into production-ready fabric will be among the scarcest resources in the seasons ahead.

Fashion and Workwear: Two Ends of Performance Fabric

In the Creative Area, reworked checks, garment dyeing and 3D surfaces pulled performance fabric out of the traditional outdoor frame. Wisher Industrial's Seamless PUFFY uses a one-piece seamless woven puffy jacquard to trap an insulating air layer. Texet Commercial's YD-CHECK 2L (64% rec. PES, 34% Rayon, 250 g/m²) uses yarn-dyeing to give a classic large check lasting colour, laminated to a transparent TPU film and finished with fluorine-free water repellency. At the other end, workwear is shifting toward "tough abrasion resistance, flame-retardant protection and high recycled content" — for example IBQ Textiles' 100% T2T recycled polyester yarn, and Almodo Altunlar's fabric rated against 80 km/h abrasion.

Taiwan's T2T Supply Chain — and Honmyue's Matching Fabrics

Four Mono-Material Approaches Compared

ApproachExample FabricHow It Reduces Recycling Complexity
Fabric + membrane in one polymer familyHonmyue Mono-Poly Pro (rec. PES + TPEE membrane)Fabric and waterproof-breathable membrane belong to one material system, so layers don't need to be separated before recycling
Fabric + film in the same nylonHonmyue Mono-NetCycle (fishing-net rec. PA + nylon film)Fabric and laminated film are both nylon, so the mono-material structure makes end-of-life recycling easier
Mono-material double-layer structureP&E Textile T2T double-layer fabricStructure replaces layering of dissimilar materials, balancing abrasion resistance with lower recycling complexity
Single-layer woven, no chemical glueSingtex STORMFLEECE®PROA dense construction locks fibres in place without chemical glue, and also reduces microfibre shedding in washing

Sourcing Checklist & FAQ

Five Questions to Ask Suppliers Before Your Next RFQ

#Question to AskWhy It Matters
1Is the recycled content pre-consumer, post-consumer, or recovered from garments / fabric?Determines whether it is genuinely T2T, and shapes brand claims and certification
2Does it use physical, chemical or enzymatic recycling?Affects recycled-material quality, performance and further recyclability
3Is the whole product mono-material? Do fabric, membrane and thread sit in the same material system?Decides whether the product can go straight into recycling without disassembly
4Is the water-repellent finish PFAS-free (e.g. C0)?Keeps fluorinated chemicals out of the recycling stream and lowers regulatory risk
5Which recycling certifications and test reports can be provided (e.g. GRS, RCS)?Gives sustainability claims third-party documentation to stand on
Q: How is T2T recycled fabric different from ordinary recycled polyester?

T2T turns waste textiles — garments, fabric and offcuts — back into fibre, closing a "fabric back to fabric" loop. Ordinary recycled polyester mostly comes from waste plastic bottles. According to Textile Exchange's 2026 report, about 97% of recycled polyester feedstock is bottles, and T2T polyester accounts for only 0.3% of global polyester output, which makes T2T fabric genuinely scarce.

Q: What is the difference between physical and chemical recycling?

Physical (mechanical) recycling shreds and melts waste before spinning it into fibre. The process is simpler, but fibre quality depends on the input. Chemical recycling (including enzymatic recycling) breaks the polymer down into smaller molecules, purifies them and re-polymerises, giving recycled material quality closer to virgin. This season's Toray and REO-ECO winners both take the latter route, and the show noted that both routes have reached commercial maturity.

Q: Why is mono-material fabric especially well suited to workwear and outdoor apparel?

Workwear has to withstand heavy labour and frequent washing, and it is discarded in volume, so recycling efficiency directly affects a brand's circularity results. Mono-material construction — for example 100% recycled polyester with a TPEE membrane from the same polyester family — delivers durability and recyclability at the same time. That is why this season's workwear section stressed "tough abrasion resistance, flame-retardant protection and high recycled content."

Q: Is PFAS-free DWR durable enough?

Durability depends on how the finish pairs with the fabric structure, and products differ quite a bit. We recommend asking for before- and after-wash water-repellency test data at the sampling stage, then deciding by use case. At this show, award-winning and jury-recommended fabrics widely used fluorine-free solutions, showing that high-end performance fabric does not need to depend on fluorinated chemistry. Honmyue's recommended Mono-Poly Pro, Mono-NetCycle and Eco Cotton-Like all specify fluorine-free water repellency, and Mono-NetCycle exceeds 10,000 mm water column.

Q: Which Honmyue fabrics match the 2028 S/S trends?

Honmyue had five fabrics recommended by the jury this season. For packs & bags, there is Eco Cotton-Like, with its cotton-like hand, and Mono-NetCycle, a mono-material fabric made from fishing nets. For workwear, RePET Armor is a 2Layer laminate with both water column and breathability at 20,000, and the mono-material Mono-Poly Pro suits workwear and outdoor outer layers alike. ReBlend DTY, made by remaking production offcuts into yarn, speaks to the T2T theme.
